Yes, you read that right. We are officially getting a Gotham City Sirens movie. Gotham City Sirens will star Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn, who we most recently saw in Suicide Squad, and, surprisingly so, Director David Ayer returning to the DCEU after just recently directing Suicide Squad. Now, I’ve seen a mixed reaction to this news and I personally am fine with it considering we’ve been hearing for awhile that there was a Harley Quinn spinoff movie in the works. Not only have we’ve known for awhile now they’ve been working towards a Harley solo but that her Siren brethren may also star as well as the Birds of Prey.
Today’s news was surprising but not that surprising all at the same time. The things that stood out to me about the news today was One, David Ayer being brought back to the DCEU to direct Gotham City Sirens. This surprised me because of all the rumblings about disagreements about the final cut of Suicide Squad. It just caught me off guard of how fast he was willing to comeback. Now this production is a bit different with Margot Robbie spearheading the project herself and Geoff Johns now having a bit more decision making power than he once did. Considering that I could see why he’s back but was a bit unexpected.
Two, The Gotham City Sirens being in the movie is not that surprising. What is surprising is that the movie is titled Gotham City Sirens. Based on the new title, it’s safe to say that the movie will have the villains be the protagonists, similar to Suicide Squad. What makes this interesting is that there’s a possibility that we may see heroes play the antogonist, now if that is Batman or the Birds of Prey that remains to be seen. The title also increases the likely hood of seeing Harley’s Siren sisters, Catwoman and Poison Ivy, that and David Ayer posting a picture of Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Posion Ivy.
Now for Three, the news of David Ayer directing and Gotham City Sirens as the official title wasn’t the only news we got. Apparently Suicide Squad 2 is in development, not surprising, but also WB is looking into a Deadshot solo film, surprising. As a fan of Deadshot and Will Smith’s portrayal of Deadshot I can honestly say a Deadshot solo isn’t exactly the best move. I prefer Suicide Squad being Deadshot focused as the main member and we could squeeze in his story in those movies. I don’t think the character warrants his own solo, but that’s my opinion.
Those were the three things that surprised me overall. I am generally excited to see this all girl Superhero/Villain movie happen and can’t wait to see which characters are included and even more so to see which actresses get casted in these iconic geek parts. I also don’t honestly expect this more street level movie to tie in with any overarching storyline so, it may be able to stand alone just in the same world.
Well that’s all I got to say on the matter. Don’t forget if you have any questions or opinions comment below and I’ll be sure to check on them when I can.
